RAC 2016

The 12th Roman Archaeology Conference. The ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome from March, 16th to 19th 2016.

The Biennal International Roman Archaeology Conference and the Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference in collaboration with the Roman Society will be hosted by the ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome form March 16th to 19th.

The Roman Archaeology Conference, alternately held in the UK and abroad, aims at bringing together interested parties from all sectors to present and discuss the latest archaeological discoveries from the Roman world and beyond.

A specific session will focus on the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. The Greek text, attributed to an anonymous sailor or merchant of the mid-first century AD, provides the most detailed written account of trade between the Roman Empire and the Orient. The session will present the results of recent archaeological evidence from key port sites active in this trade. It will critically assess the location, date and range of artefacts and environmental finds in reference to the Periplus and, in doing so, evaluate the reliability of this text and whether it can be regarded representative of the period.
