A new site for IMTO

A new archaeological site, Al Hamr al Sharqiya, in the territory of Khor Rori, is being studied by the Italian Mission to Oman

Two archaeological campaigns have already been carried out. The first one was aimed at defining the preliminary chronology of the Islamic settlement on the Eastern part of the promontory; the second at clarifying the origin and the layout of the main gate in the Northern wall.

During the last campaign of 2016, IMTO started to dig out a rectangular building, in front of the main gate, in order to understand its functions and chronology. Some deep trenches near the structure have pointed out that it was built during the Islamic period, but on circular structures made of megalithic stones.

These structures are being studied during the present mission, that started on January and will finish on April, 6th.
