National Museum of Beirut

The National Museum is one of the most significant Near Eastern museums because of its rich collection.
It opened its doors in 1937. At the beginning it included just a small collection gatherd by the French officer Raymond Weill but in a few years it achieved a very rich collection spanning from Prehistory to the 19th c. AD.
Indeed, being part of the General Directorate of Antiquities, objects found during excavations undertaken by the latter, sarcophagi, mosaics, jewelry, coins, ceramics, woodwork, weapons…, were constantly added to its collections.
